Support Ron Paul’s “American Freedom Agenda Act”
“Should we wander [from the essential principles of our government] in moments of error or alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety.”
—Thomas Jefferson, upon repealing the “Alien and Sedition Acts”
The ”American Freedom Agenda Act” is a bill . .
The full text of this bill can be found on the Background page. This legislation will . . .
- Repeal the “Military Commissions Act of 2007” and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents
- Restore the ”Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States
- Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President’s use of “signing statements” as a means to avoid executing the nation’s laws
- Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments
- Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government
- Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions
This one simple 3-page bill will . . .
- Restore basic Constitutional protections
- Empower Americans to support human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in the world at large free from the stink of hypocrisy
- Protect Americans and American soldiers from blowback by foreign powers in retaliation for our government’s transgression of America’s most hallowed principles
If ever there was a bill that all Americans should support, it is this one. Please send a message to your elected representatives asking them to co-sponsor the “American Freedom Agenda Act.”
If we give up the freedoms we have in the name of the freedoms we have, we still lose the freedoms we have.

Find Your Candidate - VAJoe.com - Where The Military Matters Most
Try the Candidate Calculator and find out who really represents your interests. My results were no surprise:
Your Top Match:
You selected you would vote for Gravel. Based on your responses, this is your top candidate for 2008.
Former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel (D)
96.36% match
From Mike Gravel:
Rather than asking you to name a favorite candidate, this poll asks for your feelings on all the major issues. Then it reveals which candidate most closely matches your beliefs. I won the poll by a significant margin! Since the military is a cross section of America, I believe this poll shows that a plurality of voters shares my views and is looking for an alternative to the top-tier candidates.Mike Gravel for President

It seems that lately I keep running into these absurd panic mongers raving about microwave ovens slowly killing me, mostly from a well meaning, but persistent relative who has already made up his mind and does not want to hear about any fancy science.
While I agree that it is entirely possible to ruin perfectly good food with a microwave (you can do that with any cooking device), that doesn’t mean that food cooked in a microwave is going to cause cancer or starve you of nutrients and make you fat.
There’s a nifty little brochure here –> Microwave Myths that debunks the misinformation and gives tips for using a microwave oven safely.
Bon appétit!

Push for Tougher Rules on Wind Industry
WASHINGTON (AP) - Birds and bats have a powerful advocate in the new Congress, and he is making the wind energy industry nervous.
Rep. Nick Rahall [D-WV], chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, is pushing legislation that would more strictly regulate wind energy to protect birds, bats and other wildlife killed when they fly into the giant turbines.
Wind energy advocates say the bill could significantly cripple the burgeoning industry and they brand the measure as “anti-wind.”A release from the American Wind Energy Association last month said Rahall’s plan could “essentially outlaw” the generation of electricity from new wind power plants in the United States.
So, the same Congressman from the great state of West Virginia who supports the oxymoronic “clean” coal and who wants to turn coal into diesel fuel thereby putting a double whammy on the atmosphere by adding more CO2 during the production process and creating more CO2 emitting fuel to burn, wants to put the kibosh on non-polluting wind technology.
But he wants us to believe that it’s because he wants to protect some bats and birds.
It’s getting harder impossible to tell the Democrats and Republicans apart. They all look like toads.

Boing Boing: HOWTO get your security deposit back when you move out
WikiHow has a great HOWTO for vacating an apartment without surrendering your security deposit — not just how to clean it, but how to clean it in such a way that your landlord can’t claim that you still owe. Wish I’d known about this before: I once had a crooked landlord keep back some of my deposit for failing to clean an oven that I had never, ever used during my tenancy (and this was after the landlord inspected my apartment and told me it was all OK). Link (via Consumerist)
Before you move in, insist on a move-in inspection and take pictures of everything — the camera may pick up things you fail to notice. Don’t rely on the landlord to point out what is damaged and don’t let them blow you off or accept any promise that isn’t in writing. (”Trust, but verify.” - Ronald Reagan)
Then start saving money so you can afford to buy a house once you have enough for a substantial down payment and don’t get conned into a sub-prime loan.

Never give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call.
THE VERDICT: HANG UP! Don’t Fall for Jury Duty Scam
The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he’ll need some information for “verification purposes”-your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number.
This is when you should hang up the phone. It’s a scam.
The FBI is too busy spying on war protesters and vegans to track down jury duty dodgers.

Box of condoms leads to evacuation - Yahoo! News
ANKENY, Iowa - Several classrooms at Des Moines Area Community College were evacuated after college officials became nervous about a suspicious package.
College officials called police and postal inspectors after the box was delivered Thursday. What they found inside wasn’t a bomb — it was a box containing 500 condoms.
The package was sent to a teacher of a human sexuality class, and was sent by a person who had been a previous speaker at the class, said Rob Denson, the college’s president.
I knew that abstinence only educators weren’t completely honest, never mind that they don’t keep anyone from having sex, but come on. A box of condoms is going to explode?
Unless the teacher just wanted an excuse for not distributing them.

High-testosterone people reinforced by others’ anger, new study finds
Most people don’t appreciate an angry look, but a new University of Michigan psychology study found that some people find angry expressions so rewarding that they will readily learn ways to encourage them.
“It’s kind of striking that an angry facial expression is consciously valued as a very negative signal by almost everyone, yet at a non-conscious level can be like a tasty morsel that some people will vigorously work for,” said Oliver Schultheiss, co-author of the study and a U-M associate professor of psychology.
Dick Cheney could have told you that. He uses it as a motivational tool and hires his minions accordingly. He loves doling out the “tasty morsels” of angry looks.

Cheney, Reid Spar Over Iraq Policy
“It is cynical to declare that the war is lost because you believe it gives you political advantage,” Cheney said.
“I’m not going to get into a name calling match with the administration’s chief attack dog,” [Reid] said.
That would be some funny stuff if it weren’t for the whole starting a war for political advantage thing.

Arrest of Armed Subject on Campus
On April 24, 2007 at 3:58 a.m., the USF Police Department arrested Cloal Lang Leatherman, W/M, DOB: 08/20/59 for possession of a firearm on school grounds. The subject was asleep in his vehicle in the Police Department parking lot. Upon contact, officers noticed a .38 caliber handgun on the seat beside him. The subject was placed under arrest. A search of the car produced a shotgun and several different types of ammunition and a survival knife. The subject is not affiliated with USF.
The subject was transported to Hillsborough County Jail and booked on felony charge of Possession of a Firearm on School Property.
Given the timing, I’m starting to not believe anything anybody says.

Homo erectus
For H. erectus, it may have paid to be dense. According to one theory, males rammed each other with their thick skulls in order to win females. H. erectus is generally believed to be the direct ancestor of modern humans and also the first hominid to live in caves and tame fire.
In other Vice Presidential news, Dick Cheney will have his leg examined by his doctor on Tuesday, more than a month after a blood clot was found in his left leg when he returned from a nine-day trip to Asia.
Maybe they should examine his head.

Media Matters - Smerconish: “It almost seems like” VA Tech shooter “wasn’t hooking up enough”
Discussing Cho Seung-Hui — the 23-year-old student who killed 32 people and himself at Virginia Tech — on the April 23 edition of Michael Smerconish’s radio show, simulcast on MSNBC, Smerconish asserted, “It almost seems like, you know, this guy wasn’t hooking up enough, and it allowed him to build up these frustrations that he might not otherwise have had.”
Bet #1: This moron Bill O’Reilly wannabe fine conservative commentator will try to defend himself by claiming he didn’t know that “hooking up” meant having sex. “Like, you know?”
Bet #2: The Imus time slot on MSNBC will be open again real soon.
Any takers?

The Raw Story | Pro-gun lobby strengthened following US campus shooting
The powerful US gun lobby, far from being weakened by last week’s tragic college campus shooting, actually has emerged stronger, gun advocates said Sunday, stepping up calls for a better-armed US citizenry to prevent future attacks.
Let me get this straight:
Guns don’t kill people, people kill people so let’s make sure that all the people have guns to kill with?
Someone needs to check their rhetoric math.

50% Good News Is the Bad News in Russian Radio - New York Times
At their first meeting with journalists since taking over Russia’s largest independent radio news network, the managers had startling news of their own: from now on, they said, at least 50 percent of the reports about Russia must be “positive.”
In addition, opposition leaders could not be mentioned on the air and the United States was to be portrayed as an enemy, journalists employed by the network, Russian News Service, say they were told by the new managers, who are allies of the Kremlin.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, President Bush thinks it isn’t fair and only wishes he could do the same as his good friend Putin.

Rove warns of threat of terrorism
In a question-and-answer period after his speech, Rove was asked whose idea it was to start a pre-emptive war in Iraq.
“I think it was Osama bin Laden’s,'’ Rove replied.
Bin Laden was based in Afghanistan when he orchestrated the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Bush acknowledged last year that Iraq under Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11.
